No Beckham, no problem as Galaxy advance with 6-5 win

David Beckham was missing and so was any hint of defending but the Los Angeles Galaxy advanced to the Superliga tournament semi-finals here Tuesday with a 6-5 victory over FC Dallas.


Cardinals CB Brown signs 1-year deal

Free-agent cornerback Ralph Brown re-signed with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, agreeing to a one-year deal. Brown played in all 16 games for Arizona last season, with 23 tackles — 17 solo — and one interception. The eight-year NFL veteran has also played for the New York Giants, Minnesota Vikings and Cleveland Browns.


Rodriguez misses out as Yankees blast eight homers

Marquez Lugo’s goal leads Pachuca to 1-0 win

Rafael Marquez Lugo scored on a header in the 62nd minute off a pass from Christian Gimenez, and goalkeeper Miguel Calero made several brilliant saves as Pachuca beat Chivas Guadalajara 1-0 Tuesday night and advanced to the SuperLiga semifinals. Calero made two big stops on Gonzalo Pineda in the first eight minutes of the second half, then watched as Jesus Padilla sent a shot that just missed.

Agent says Rockets to re-sign F Hayes

Chuck Hayes and the Houston Rockets have reached agreement on a four-year contract to keep the forward in Houston, Hayes’ agent said Tuesday. “I feel good about getting it done, and I’m glad Chuck has some security,” agent Calvin Andrews said. The 6-foot-6 Hayes started 43 games and averaged 5.6 points and 6.7 rebounds last season.


Monarchs 78, Storm 74

Nicole Powell scored 28 points and the Sacramento Monarchs beat the Seattle Storm 78-74 Tuesday night to move within one game of first place in the Western Conference. Powell, coming off a career-high 29 points in a loss to Minnesota on Sunday, scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.
