Thornton stars in Sharks’ win over Avs

Although Joe Thornton usually does his finest work helping others, the Sharks superstar threw himself quite an anniversary party Friday night. Thornton had two goals and an assist in a dominant two-way performance exactly two years after his arrival from Boston, and San Jose snapped a three-game winless streak with a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Avalanche.



Kirilenko gets triple-double, Jazz roll

After looking dead serious for most of the night, Utah’s Andrei Kirilenko couldn’t stop from grinning slightly as he walked to the bench during a time out. Kirilenko had just clinched his third triple-double in Utah’s unlikely 120-96 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday night. He was swarmed by his teammates with hugs and high-fives.

Nuggets snap 3-game skid, top Clippers

Carmelo Anthony had a nasty red scratch running down his left cheek courtesy of a fingernail from a Los Angeles Clippers player. He’s not sure of the exact culprit, only that the wound stung. Outside of the scratch, it was a painless evening for Anthony and the Nuggets. The team snapped a three-game losing streak with a 123-107 victory over the Clippers on Friday night.



Horcoff, Roloson lead surging Oilers

The Oilers made sure the Anaheim Ducks didn’t have anything to show for another disappointing game in Edmonton. Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists, and Dwayne Roloson made 21 saves to help Edmonton beat Anaheim 5-1 on Friday night for their third victory in four games. With the win, Edmonton improved to 11-1-3 in their last 15 home games against the Ducks.



Low’s 3s help No. 6 Washington St. win

Low hit consecutive 3-pointers in a span of 46 seconds to finally push the Cougars in front and they went on to a 67-64 victory Friday night over a scrappy Baylor team looking for a signature victory.


McCorvey leads Auburn past UC-Riverside in ASU Classic

Tamela McCorvey scored 14 points to lead No. 18 Auburn to a 64-47 victory over UC-Riverside on Friday night in the first round of the Arizona State University Classic. The Tigers will play No. 14 Arizona State, a 78-60 winner over Gonzaga on Friday, in Sunday’s championship game. Auburn (7-0) used a 14-0 run, sparked by a pair of 3-pointers by McCorvey, late in the first half to take control.


2 Vick co-defendants sentenced

A federal judge sentenced two of the suspended NFL star’s dogfighting cohorts to 18 months and 21 months in prison Friday.

Derrick Low kept taking shots for No. 6 Washington State, even though most of them were missing the mark for the team’s leading scorer. His perseverance paid off — and kept the Cougars undefeated.
